SYDNEY

Travel Journal

Our Australian, New Zealand and Cook Islands Adventure

Our daughter and her family had the good fortune of living in Australia for a year, so of course we needed to go and visit before their time was up.  It was a really long flight, but surprisingly I found it an easier one than going to England.  We went via San Francisco and because it was so long, I actually slept for about 6 hours instead of watching lots of movies.  We arrived in Sydney - what a surprise.  We absolutely loved Sydney; in some respects it reminded us of a larger Quebec City with its myriad of steps and rock.  We stayed in the area called The Rocks, which made it very easy to get around and see the sights.

Angel Place

We walked around the area near the hotel and were enchanted with Angel Place.  There were recordings of birdsong playing and empty bird cages above us.  It is representing the many birds who used to live in this area, but because of the urbanisation, they are no longer present.

There were a lot of beautiful buildings, quite a mixture of old and new.  I particularly liked the use of sandstone on this hotel we walked by on the harbour.

We spent quite a long time wandering around the Queen Victoria building with its beautiful railings and tiled floors.

Stunning stained glass windows

My darling husband was more impressed with the men's room!

We walked for miles and visited the museum, art gallery and botanical gardens and ended up at sunset watching the sun go down behind the beautiful Opera House.

These parrots were in the parks and gardens.  You would find a flock of them in a gum tree - they were beautiful but noisy.
